Did you Know? Your junk mail can be beautiful

Witness the transformation of discarded materials into stunning works of art. Tammy J McLain's upcycled masterpieces showcase the beauty of recycling and the power of creativity.

Every piece of artwork begins with the process of shredding and soaking junk mail overnight, followed by blending it into a paper smoothie. This paper smoothie is then placed in a large bin of water, from which I pull sheets of paper from the pulp. Some of these sheets are formed using frames, while others take on a more free form. Depending on the desired effect, I may fold and drape the paper or use it to capture the intricate details of a clay sculpture. To add vibrant colors to my creations, I utilize liquid watercolor, watered-down acrylic paints, or even homemade inks derived from blackberries. This unique artistic process allows for the transformation of discarded materials into beautiful, expressive pieces of art.

Why is creativity important? Creativity opens our minds. It helps us think outside of the box, gives us space to release emotions, and brings back a little of the play we often miss from childhood. Sometimes creativity helps us solve problems. Sometimes it helps us slow down. And sometimes it simply reminds us to enjoy beautiful mistakes along the way.

How to be more creative: Creativity grows when we give it a little space to play. Sometimes all it takes is trying something new, looking at things differently, or giving yourself permission to make a mess. I'm not creative: I hear this all the time. The truth is, I think creativity looks different for everyone. Sometimes it’s making something with your hands, noticing something beautiful, trying a new medium, or simply giving yourself permission to play. You don’t have to be “good” at art to be creative. - Try a Play Card and see:
